Halliburton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"Controversies
Halliburton has become the object of several controversies involving the 2003 Iraq War and the company's ties to former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. Cheney retired from the company during the 2000 U.S. presidential election campaign with a severance package worth $36 million.[40] As of 2004, he had received $398,548 in deferred compensation from Halliburton while Vice President.[41] Cheney was chairman and CEO of Halliburton Company from 1995 to 2000 and has received stock options from Halliburton.[42]

In the run-up to the Iraq war, Halliburton was awarded a $7 billion contract for which 'unusually' only Halliburton was allowed to bid.[43]

Bunnatine Greenhouse, a civil servant with 20 years of contracting experience, had complained to Army officials on numerous occasions that Halliburton had been unlawfully receiving special treatment for work in Iraq, Kuwait and the Balkans. Criminal investigations were opened by the U.S. Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Pentagon's inspector general." Wikipedia (My selection)

If anyone is interested here is the website of Anglo-Amiricana Platinum: http://www.angloplatinum.com/

Some thoughts: Platinum is a precious metal and as is clear in the website Anglo-American's shares are up; so why do not they share the profit with their workers: the ones digging, ingesting dust particles; sacrificing their health, quality of life and longevity for a meager salary?

"Platinum is used in catalytic converters, laboratory equipment, electrical contacts and electrodesplatinum resistance thermometersdentistry equipment, and jewelry. Because only a few hundred tonnes are produced annually, it is a scarce material, and is highly valuable and is a major precious metal commodity. Being a heavy metal, it leads to health issues upon exposure to its salts, but due to its corrosion resistance, it is not as toxic as some metals.[3] Compounds containing platinum, most notably cisplatin, are applied in chemotherapy against certain types of cancer.[4]"
(My selection) Wikipedia

Furthermore, although the workers are Africans natives,  the name of the company Anglo-American Platinum suggests that the company is ran by white exploiters who- as much as during colonialism or apartheid -  exploit African resources and labor. Yet, they do no share the profits raked.

"Controversy

Anglo Platinum, the world's largest platinum miner and a subsidiary of Anglo American PLC, the world's fifth largest mining corporation, filed SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) against a South African public interest lawyer Richard Spoor, who represented indigenous communities affected by platinum mining on tribal land. The actions include an application in the High Court for a so-called gagging order, ostensibly to prevent him further injuring the good name and reputation of the corporation, the lodging of complaints with the Law Society of unprofessional behaviour and the lodging of a civil action for damages for some $500,000. Anglo Platinum also obtained an ex parte (without notice) order interdicting two tribal chiefs from interfering with their mining operations and had them arrested on charges of intimidation and trespass. Subsequently, followers of the two tribal chiefs were shot, beaten and arrested for protesting the mine's presence on tribal land.[1][2]
In August 2007, British charity War on Want published a report accusing Anglo Platinum's parent company Anglo American of profiting from the abuse of people in the developing countries in which the company operates.[3] In the report, Anglo Platinum is accused of displacing communities in South Africa, including forcing the entire Magobading community off its land and into the Mecklenberg township."  Wikipedia (My selection)

Ban the gladiatorial game, left over from our Barbaric ancestry. All players from HS to pro retire with life long injuries. It is criminal to have our children inflicting and inflicted with physical injuries. It is time for parents to refuse to sign release forms, and for people to stop watching.

It is our responsibility to keep our children safe and to stop accepting violence as a from of entertainment. Parents who authorize their kids to play this sport are endangering their children.

Ban football.

Parents who let their kids play football should be jailed for endangering their children. How many head injuries and spinal injuries will it take to ban this stupid sport?

Religion and Dawkins

Thumbs up for his courage, here are some thoughts that came to me:

I refuse to believe in a violent male entity above in the heaven who toys with humanity; I refuse to believe in a murderer who starves, inflicts diseases and rages wars - not unlike the Greek Gods - taking sides. I refuse to believe in a thunder maker who created the poor so that he could let them die. I refuse to believe in  a God who chose a few over billions others.

Zeus had warned that if people stopped believing he would destroy them.  People stopped believing they survived - although they had, for Zeus and in his name- conducted sacrifices, especially and conveniently of their daughters (dowry)...

"Jesus is to the church as men is to woman" is what religions preach; it ... is creepy.

All that I want is God taken out of the political discourse; and all the churches, mosques and temples to pay taxes, so that they do not become an evasion system through which the religious radicals channel political moneys and thus influence the laws of our country. These religious Institutions promote bigotry, because they  are isolationists, and thus always dislikes some other groups.

Believe if you may but do not impose your beliefs on me.

The separatist map of Africa: interactive | World news | guardian.co.uk: "When African states gained independence, the continent's new leaders agreed to respect the old colonial borders to avoid endless wars. But separatist movements still abound"

We should note that the colonial borders never took into account the different tribes and their undrawn territories; this has had dire consequences on Africa's stability, and are to a large extent responsible for many of the tribal unrests. Western countries and China have exploited these conflicts selling weapons to a favored tribe over others and thus gained access to Africa's rich resources.
