North Korea agrees to nuclear moratorium, IAEA inspections | Reuters

North Korea agrees to nuclear moratorium, IAEA inspections | Reuters: (Reuters) - "North Korea agreed on Wednesday to stop nuclear tests, uranium enrichment and long-range missile launches, and to allow checks by nuclear inspectors, in an apparent policy shift that paves the way for resuming long-stalled disarmament talks."

Iran worked on nuclear bomb design: U.N. | Reuters: (Reuters) -" Iran appears to have worked on designing an atomic bomb and may still be conducting relevant research, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said in a hard-hitting report on Tehran's nuclear program likely to raise tensions in the Middle East."

News Centre: Daily Press Review: "Hosono Says Fukushima Plant Cannot Cope with All Radioactive Debris The state minister in charge of handling the Fukushima nuclear accident said the government was considering temporarily storing radioactive debris on the premises of the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, but that localities affected by the disaster will have to store their own radioactive debris while authorities search for longer-term solutions. Fukushima Faces 'Massive' Radioactive Water Problem -Bloomberg

100,000 gallons of contaminated water and no end in sight; three reactors melted and three containment breached and sea weed and fish contaminated. And TEPCO is not sharing the data. Read Bloomberg

Ultimately this disaster will surpass Chernobyl by several notches.

Some news from the international Atomic Energy Agency

"On 13 May TEPCO commenced the preparatory work for the installation of a cover for the reactor building of Unit 1. The reactor building cover will be installed as an emergency measure to prevent the dispersion of radioactive substances until mid- to long term measures, including radiation shielding, are implemented."

"TEPCO has reported that information obtained after calibration of the reactor water level gauges of Unit 1 shows that the actual water level in the Unit 1 reactor pressure vessel was lower than was indicated, showing that the fuel was completely uncovered. The results of provisional analysis show that fuel pellets melted and fell to the bottom of reactor pressure vessel at a relatively early stage in the accident.
"
"Stagnant water with high levels of radioactivity in the basement of the turbine buildings of Units 1, 2 and 3 is being transferred to the condensers, the radioactive waste treatment facility, the high-temperature incinerator building and temporary storage tanks. Stagnant water in the basement of the turbine building of Unit 6 is being transferred to a temporary tank."

"The activity concentrations of I-131, Cs-134 and Cs-137 in seawater close to the Fukushima Daiichi plant at the screen of Unit 2 have been measured every day since 2 April. Concentrations of Cs-134 and Cs-137 decreased from initial values of more than 100 MBq/L to less than 5 kBq/L on 7 May, but increased to levels of around 20 kBq/L on 16 May, and to about 10 kBq/L on 17 May. There was a significant increase in levels of I-131 from about 8 to 80 kBq/L from 10 to 11 May, in parallel with the increase for both radiocaesium isotopes. This indicates that there is still some production of fission products. The I-131 levels decreased to about 20 kBq/L on 17 May."

Latest radiological monitoring in Japan

There are spikes in deposition around April 10; the report does not tell us why.

Also the IAEA reported: "Work to strengthen the electrical power system between Units 1 - 2 and Units 3 - 4 was completed on 19 April. White "smoke" continues to be emitted from Units 2, 3 and 4."

- Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Finland, France, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine have reported radioactivity in the air, all levels are very low.

Fukishima-Radiation readings and update from the IAEA

There are 4 reactors having major issues, and today it is unit 1 and 4 which are spewing white smoke. The spewed radioactive particles of Cs-137,Cs-134 and I-131(and a soup of others possibly including Strontium-90) have been and are carried by winds and deposited in at least 17 of the 48 Japan's prefectures; from March 18-25 in seven of the 17 prefectures showed I-131 at about 100 becquerel/meter squared and Cs-137 was about 500 becquerel/square meter. The highest value was found in Yamagata which had 7500 becquerel per square meter of I-131 and 1200 becquerel/square meter of Cs-137.  In Shinjyuku district of Tokyo, the daily deposition of I-131 on March 27 was 200 becquerel per square meter and 12 becquerel per square meter of Cs-137.

Samples have been taken just beyond the evacuation zone 30 km to 41 km at this location 0.9 to 17 microsievert per hour at the same location beta gamma contamination ranged from.003 to 3.1 Megabecquerel from 3,000 to 3,000,000 becquerel  per square meter.
The worldwide average background dose for a human being is about 2.4 millisievert (mSv) per year. Wikipedia

What is currently happening on site; one fresh water is being injected in some of the reactors pools and vessels; workers are trying to remove the highly contaminated water, resulting from the spraying for 12 days of sea water on the reactors. Where is that water going to go? The Ocean?

The spraying with fresh water should dilute the huge salt deposits which are now a major problem due to interfering with the cooling and creating problems of corrosion.

The officials the nuclear community understand that this accident and its complete termination will take several weeks.

I think that this accident must be raised to above the 5 it was assigned, in fact the scale top number of 7 is really where it is at, and the evacuation zone should be expanded to at least 50 miles.

Fukushima accident March 26 -IAEA

Several teams are in Japan and some are on their way to further assess the situation; a food safety assessment team is on its way to provide advice and assistance on sampling and analysis.

Four reactors are still spewing radiation and are still in critical condition:

1,2,3 and 4 are still having serious problems:

Unit 1:

Light has been restored and thus have recovered some instrumentation. Fresh water is being pumped into the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) instead of sea water.

Unit 2: Seawater injection into RPV

Unit 3: Fresh water into the RPV, seawater pumped onto the spent fuel pool. Also, workers sprayed the outside of the building.

Unit 4: Concerns remain focused on the spent fuel, seawater being pumped.

RPV pumping of water suggest some damage to the cores and vessels.

Also, there has been sea water samples taken 30 km away and found high level of I-131 and Cs-137 and the radiation particles will travel with the currents and will undoubtably reach other shores.

Fukushima Nuclear Accident Update Log -IAEA

Fukushima Nuclear Accident Update Log

IAEA updates as of March 24

- unit 3  reactor vessel may be damaged and injecting water into the spent fuel pools,
- unit 4 still being doused with sea water
- unit 5 temperature rose on the 23rd, need to replace the pump

Also, CBS reports that the salt is becoming a problem due to a build up from evaporation of the water used to douse the reactors and spent fuel pools. 57,000 pounds of salt buitd up in unit 1 and 2 and 3 have collected 99,000 pounds each. The issue salt "could to heat up the reactors more, in the worst case, cause the uranium to melt releasing a range of radioactive material."

From a panel of physicists at MIT there was concern about corrosion of the steal reactor vessels.

Things are not yet in control, the damage has been extensive. The plume covers the entire US at this point and should be covering part of Europe.
