IRSN April 8th, bulletin

  • entre quelques dixièmes de millibecquerels et quelques millibecquerels d’iode 131 par mètre cube d’air (mBq/m3) ;
  • au maximum quelques becquerels par kilogramme (Bq/kg) de végétaux (herbe ou légumes feuilles) ;

INES reports white smoke escaping from unit 1, unit 3 and 4

TEPCO found water with 5 million times the legal limit of radioactivity

Because of the ocean contamination the Japanese government is considering imposing restrictions on seafood.

There is 60,000 tons of contaminated water which will likely end up in the ocean.

odine-131 in the water near the sluice gate of reactor No. 2 hit a high on April 2 of 7.5 million times the legal limit.

"After detailed discussions, it was concluded that since the radiation is spreading/expanding horizontally in other parts of Japan, it may result in further radioactive contamination in the supply chain of food exports from Japan," a statement from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

""We have borne the risks, co-existed and flourished with TEPCO for more than 40 years, and all these years, we have fully trusted the myth that nuclear plants are absolutely safe," said Katsuya Endo, the mayor of Tomioka town."

Also, the IRSN is putting the Fukushima accident as a level 6 on the iINES scale.

Fukishima-Radiation readings and update from the IAEA

There are 4 reactors having major issues, and today it is unit 1 and 4 which are spewing white smoke. The spewed radioactive particles of Cs-137,Cs-134 and I-131(and a soup of others possibly including Strontium-90) have been and are carried by winds and deposited in at least 17 of the 48 Japan's prefectures; from March 18-25 in seven of the 17 prefectures showed I-131 at about 100 becquerel/meter squared and Cs-137 was about 500 becquerel/square meter. The highest value was found in Yamagata which had 7500 becquerel per square meter of I-131 and 1200 becquerel/square meter of Cs-137.  In Shinjyuku district of Tokyo, the daily deposition of I-131 on March 27 was 200 becquerel per square meter and 12 becquerel per square meter of Cs-137.

Samples have been taken just beyond the evacuation zone 30 km to 41 km at this location 0.9 to 17 microsievert per hour at the same location beta gamma contamination ranged from.003 to 3.1 Megabecquerel from 3,000 to 3,000,000 becquerel  per square meter.
The worldwide average background dose for a human being is about 2.4 millisievert (mSv) per year. Wikipedia

What is currently happening on site; one fresh water is being injected in some of the reactors pools and vessels; workers are trying to remove the highly contaminated water, resulting from the spraying for 12 days of sea water on the reactors. Where is that water going to go? The Ocean?

The spraying with fresh water should dilute the huge salt deposits which are now a major problem due to interfering with the cooling and creating problems of corrosion.

The officials the nuclear community understand that this accident and its complete termination will take several weeks.

I think that this accident must be raised to above the 5 it was assigned, in fact the scale top number of 7 is really where it is at, and the evacuation zone should be expanded to at least 50 miles.

High level of I-133 found in tap water at dangerous levels to infant

"Japan's health ministry says it has detected radioactive iodine levels above the safety standard for infants in tap water at 5 locations in Fukushima Prefecture.

Officials say iodine-131 levels exceeding 100 becquerels per kilogram were detected in tap water at 4 cities and 1 town. The levels ranged from 120 to 220 becquerels.

The ministry says the water does not pose an immediate risk to infants, but is advising residents against letting infants drink it or adding it to powdered milk.

What are mothers suppose to do? Breast feeding is good and supplies a natural source of Iodide; yet, if the mothers have ingested radioactive isotopes themselves? I guess considering that water is contaminated breast milk is more likely to be less dangerous to infants. And it is possible that mothers may naturally increase the production of iodide, but is only an hypothesis.

We wish that our governments would tell people what they could do to weather a nasty nuclear cloud which is affecting the whole Northern Hemisphere.

Here is a crazy list of things people say are good for you, although these may have no effect at least we are thinking of foods and nutrition:

- Iodized salt;
- kelp supplements
- for people in the immediate threat zone: potassium Iodide or KI (Poland elected to distribute KI to children during the Chernobyl accident; I wonder what the results were compare to children's leukemia rate in other European countries which did not distribute it?)
- we have heard brown rice
- we have heard red wine
- we have heard not to eat mushrooms or milk or spinach or canola ... However there are no diet that have been scientifically proven to protect against Cs-137, Strontium 90 or I-131

NHK World

- High radiation detected 40 km away in the soil exceeding 400 times the 'normal' level.

"The ministry found 43,000 becquerels of radioactive iodine-131 per kilogram of soil, and 4,700 becquerels of radioactive cesium-137 per kilogram about 40 kilometers west-northwest of the plant." see NHK

IAEA last update

Here are excerpts:
"The concern about the spent fuel pools at Fukushima Daiichi is that the capability to cool the pools has been compromised. Elevated radiation measurements at the site may be partially of the result of uncovered or overheated spent fuel."
"White smoke was reported seen emanating from Unit 2 on 21 March at 9:22 UTC. Grayish smoke was reported seen emanating from unit 3 at 6:55 on 21 March, and this was reported to have "died down" two hours later. All workers at Units 1 through 4 evacuated after the smoke at Unit 3 was seen. The IAEA is seeking further information at this time on the status of workers at the site."

Radioactivity found in Iceland - Reuters

"Another source said about 15 CTBTO stations had so far detected particles believed to originate from the Fukushima nuclear complex, which leaked some radioactivity in the days after it was hit on March 11 by a huge earthquake and tsunami."

We would like to know which 15 stations have detected radiations? But we can safely say that the West Coast up and down have recorded some radiations; but several others must have recorded radiations inland. As long as the public is not informed, the public will be worrying; especially when the President has taken his family to South America as the radioactive plume travels over the US.

France expects the plume on Wednesday, says the ASN.

Xe-133 over the US and still coming

The Cs-137 and I-131 are not working anymore, it is obvious that they would follow the same trajectory than Xe-133; I think that t is another way to prevent people from knowing the extent of the accident. I think truth would get people involved to close the nuclear power plants in their neighborhoods and built in seismic active areas.

Spent fuel hampers efforts at Japanese nuclear plant -NY Times

-Storage pool in number 2 reactor was spewing steam, thus workers had to go back to dousing with water.

- Power has been restored to #5 and #6 thus we must assume that the other four reactors are not.

- Workers are still pumping water onto 3 reactors.

- Cs-137 and I-131 have been found in high concentration in the ocean near the power plant and the government is testing seafood.

- NHK reported that radiation levels surpassing 400 times the normal level were detected 25 miles away.

- Some level of radiation in veggies, milk, dust and tap water.

- 9,079 dead and still 18,000 missing.

- And the Chiba refinery fire was finally put out.

- People in shelters need better sanitation.

Fifteen years on, the estimation made in 1996 is still valid. However the results presented in Table 1 are incomplete with respect to the release of the short-lived radionuclides (132I and 135I). In the UNSCEAR 2000 report (UN00), the overall releases of short-lived radioiodines are presented on the basis of early and re-estimated informations (Ab86, Iz90); they are found to be substantially lower than those of 131I (1760 PBq), 1040 PBq, 910, 25 and 250 respectively for 132I, 133I, 134I and 135I, 132I is assumed to be in radioactive equilibrium with 132Te.

Although the releases were considerably reduced on 5 and 6 May (days 9 and 10) after the accident), continuing low-level releases occurred in the following week and for up to 40 days after the accident, particularly on 15 and 16 may, attributable to continuing outbreaks of fires or to hot areas in the reactor. These later releases can be correlated with increased concentrations of radionuclides in air measured at Kiev and Vilnius.

New sign of food contamination with high radioactive isotope NY Times

- Milk from Japan is highly contaminated
- Reactor 5 and 6 are stabilized restored pumping ( they only had minor damage)
- number 3 still out of control
- More venting of reactor 3 expected, pressure is building the steam will be highly radioactive and likely carried in the stratosphere and then dumped on the troposphere with any precipitation
- Spraying of water continues on reactor 3 storage pools, number 2 and number 4
- "At least 25 workers and five members of the Japanese Self-Defense Force have been exposed to unsafe amounts of radiation, according to the power company. At least 20 workers and four self-defense soldiers have been injured, and two workers remain missing."
- Milk seems worst than spinach
- food supply low
