For women with soon to be born children: breast feed your kids
The mothers' breast milk has a perfect amount of iodide ready for the baby so that its brain will develop well; I think that with women who are pregnant anywhere in the world but particularly in Asia, because of radiation plumes should plan to breast feed their children.
Maybe we should have access to protective equipment like masks and clothing

"Related to its dietary use, radioactive iodine is a potential component of nuclear fallout, and a dangerous one due to the thyroid gland's propensity to concentrate iodine from the bloodstream. For this reason if people are expected to be exposed to a large dose of radioactive iodine, they may be instructed to take non-radioactive potassium iodide tablets. The typical adult dose is one 130 mg tablet per 24 hours. By ingesting a large amount of non-radioactive iodine, the proportion of radioactive iodine taken into the thyroid gland may be minimized. This is one way to try to mitigate the health impact of exposure to fallout."
Reuters latest news are grim
Radiation is reaching Tokyo, 150 miles away. The Japanese government is asking people to stay indoors. Check the article in Reuters
Here is a list of the main recent events:
- US military to stay on the West coast of Japan
- Increase in the number of military personnel exposed to radiation
- Four explosions at the nuclear power plant the most recent blast were at 2 and 4
- Fire in unit 4
- exposed spent fuel rods (thus, at least partial meltdown
- level of radiation dangerous to humans

Impact of the nuclear accident in Japan is unknown writes Brian Vastag in the Washington Post
This is an excellent article; it gives some chemical background and also explains that some of the effects won't be known for several decades; but we can safely say that there will be an increase in mutation rate and these will have dire genetic consequences.
Humans are insane to keep using nuclear power
It is evident that the explosions have spewed high level of radiation into the air and that these radiation will travel with the winds to other countries worldwide: one planet, one atmosphere. The first venting plume should be reaching the East coast of N. America soon since it is likely to have travelled with the jet stream. We hope that the government will inform the public if radiation is detected and will take steps to protect the public from contaminated foods.
Humans are insane to keep using plutonium or uranium since these elements are way too radioactive , unstable and their half life in million of years. It is irrational to keep using nuclear energy and certainly with the knowledge we now possess it is absurd to promote the building of new nuclear power plants . In this country alone there has been more than 50 "incidents" since Three Mile Island at several nuclear plants the most recent accident involved the plant in Vermont in February 2010 which leaked radioactive tritium into the ground water: see the list in Wikipedia
I live in NC, I would gladly give my roof top to the energy company if this would close the power plants in NC.

Thoughts on nuclear power plants
It is insane is that nuclear power plants have been built on faults. This is not only the case in Japan, Indian point nuclear power plant in Buchanan NY and Diablo Canyon in California are built on faults. Furthermore, the life expectancy of a nuclear power plant should not exceed 30 years; Indian Point needs to be closed now as are many older plants in the US. Also nuclear wastes won't go away for generations to come and we understand that the materials of containments degrade over time: concrete cracks and the radiation further degrade the materials used to encase the spent fuel; thus, we must stop building nuclear power plants and stop using uranium, plutonium and other highly radioactive elements.

Nothing will change since the military is in power and it seems that Saudi Arabia is planning to give the Egyptian army $1.3 billion to match the US moneys, this is to ensure that the Egyptian end up with a government the US, Israel and Saudi want. Saudi is Mobilizing Troops to Quail Discontent Reports Al Jazeera and The Guardian
In the press the emphasis has been on the evil Gaddafi, and very little on King Abdullah Aziz of Saudi Arabia who is mobilizing thousands of troops to quail the rising discontent, as reported Aljazeera and The Guardian this morning. The different treatment of the two leaders seems to reflect the US likes and dislikes. Everyone knows Gaddafi is disliked and King Abdullah is liked. King Abdullah is more important for the US and its economy because: he owns 7% of News Corp., he paid $36 billion of the $60 billion the US spent on the Gulf war Wikipedia, he owns part of the US national debt and of course he provides us with oil.
